Front hinge cracked due to removal of ffe,rear hinge olid and sound without any cracking.Bright,crisp,fairly clean and bright,publisher's original blocked pictorial illustrated caricatures to front board and to spine/backstrip,the former blocked in black ink,the latter blocked in gilt decoration along with bright,crisp,blocked gilt lettering of title,author and publisher all to a dark green cloth; with negligible shelf-wear,minimal bumping to corners' tips,and head+foot of spine/backstrip – no nicks,tears or splits present,rear board plain and undecorated.Top, fore and bottom edges coloured and waxed(?),clean without blemish; contents bright,tight,reasonably clean – no dog-ear reading creases to pages' corners – appears unread,apart from my own collation.UK,12mo HB,no dw/dj,- as issued,3rd edn,illus list/table,10-223pp [paginated] includes I-VIII chapters each with a b/w illuminated Capital of first word of each chapter,24 part+full age b/w line illustrations by James Affleck Shepherd - includes b/w line illustrated frntis and vignette illustrated title page,other illus throughout the text and the book; plus [unpaginated] off-setting to half-title from facing pastedown with foxing/spotting to publisher's advert to same's reverse,Wordsworth prose verse extract to revers of title page,first page of contents list/table with blank to its reverse,first page of illustrations list/table,and to the rear 5pp b/w illustrated publisher's advertisement for 6 other published animal-related fact+fiction titles. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age, over 100 years old and nature, i.e. a child's book,and even internally,the book is also in an acceptablel condition/state of preservation and presentation.It is only the faults described that prevent a higher grading. James Affleck Shepherd (1867-1946).Born London,rarely used his first forename – most of his works are simply signed "J.A.S." .Studied and worked for two years under Alfred Bryan,cartoonist of the satirical magazine 'Moonshine'.Shepherd was an animal painter and a writer,but was best known for his humorous b/w line drawings of anthropomorphic animals with human clothing and personalities.He first made his name with his popular series 'Zig Zag Fables',originally published in 'The Strand Magazine',and immediately afterwards (in 1893),joined the staff of 'Punch',continuing as a contributor for the next forty years.Of this popular series,8 editions were published between 1897 and 1910.He illustrated many books and was a contributor to 'The Rosebud' annuals, which were renowned for their illustrations by Louis Wain.He also notably Illustrated two of Joel Chandler Harris's books - 'Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings' (8 editions published between 1901-1927) and 'Nights with Uncle Remus' (4 editions published between 1907-1925). At their best his drawings,which were often in outline,displayed remarkable style and wit.Thorpe considered that 'Shepherd's drawings of animals are the best and funniest that have ever been made.'
